In 2018, Papé marks its 80th year of keeping the West moving. Over the next several months, we’ll highlight how the company’s history and current business operations have set the foundation for an exciting future that spans across all the industries Papé members serve.
It all started in 1938 when E.C. Papé settled in the Willamette Valley to work with a friend in an Allis-Chalmers dealership selling and servicing the brand’s well-known orange painted farm implements to farmers throughout the region.
Known for his work ethic, E.C.’s reputation grew quickly because of his unparalleled understanding that selling and servicing capital equipment was more than just a sale – it’s a commitment to the customer, their business, and their family.
Under the leadership of E.C.’s son, Dean, the company changed its name to Papé Bros, Inc., on June 29, 1956, and merged with Douglas Tractor Co. In order to support the growing needs of farmers, loggers, and builders in the Willamette Valley, Dean made the decision to become a Caterpillar dealer just one month later.
Papé is no stranger to innovation. In the 1960s, Ed and Dean Papé introduced the Northwest timber industry to rubber-tired skidders. This modernization allowed loggers to move logs safer and easier from the forest to the trucks waiting to take them to a mill. Then, in the mid-1970s, Papé modified a Caterpillar 225 excavator into the very first Caterpillar log loader. Once more, in the late 1970s, Papé modified a 988B wheel loader bucket machine to the first single pass a fully loaded log truck at 63,000 lbs.
In 1990, Dean’s son, Randy Papé, expanded the business to include Hyster dealerships in Oregon, Washington and California. He formed The Papé Group, Inc., to better represent the variety of capital equipment and commitment to customer service that Papé provides to the agriculture, construction, timber, trucking, and warehouse industries through Papé Machinery, Papé Material Handling, Papé Kenworth, Ditch Witch Northwest, and Engineered Products.
Over the years, the Papé name has become synonymous with quality and the company has continued to grow by adding capital equipment lines that meet the customers’ increasing needs for new and varied equipment to support their ever-changing operations.
Today, the Papé legacy continues under Susie, Ryan, and Jordan Papé, who have expanded the company’s market presence in the West from Mexico to the Canadian border. One thing remains true – the customer and their needs have always come first, ever since E.C. sold his first Allis-Chalmers tractor.
